What a bummer. PCRM is an amazing organization with many smart, compassionate people working for it, but I was beyond bummed to see these ads. I’m loathe to say boo about them because I’ve done contract work for the organization and found the experience fun and rewarding. BUT COME ON. When you put shit like this in the world, shit you will get in return.
Vegan community, we gotta stop the fat shaming. It’s ugly, mean, stupid, counter productive, and it fucking sucks. I’m not a fan of Skinny Bitch, but this is even more blatant and gross because at least Skinny Bitch makes an argument for veganism right there, makes the connection. This is more like YOU’RE FAT AND THAT’S GROSS BYE! Plus, plenty (PLENTY!) of skinny people eat cheese on the regular, it’s just not a compelling argument. I’ve got big ol’ cottage cheese thighs (yum!) and I have since becoming vegan and since before I was vegan and I’m gonna have them until the maggots eat away at my dead body. Psych! I’m totally having my body donated to science because I’m a MEDICAL MARVEL. Too sexy for burial! That’s what I want my toe-tag to read! Anyway, point is, fat-shaming isn’t gonna get anyone to go vegan, it’s just gonna get people defensive and closed down to your message. It also sets the internet against vegans in general. Maybe you think all publicity is good publicity but I don’t know how true that is, especially since every time I tell someone I’m vegan, they’re like, “UGH PETA” and then I have to defend myself and PETA for a half hour. So, just knock it off.
I don’t ever defend PETA, but I do have to defend myself often simply because I’m vegan.
I do see a lot of people saying “so many vegans are racist and classist and fat-shamers” but, funny enough, I don’t ever see them saying that about, I don’t know, EVERY FUCKING OTHER GROUP OF PEOPLE IN THE WORLD? There ARE many racist and classist vegans and vegans who fat-shame, don’t get me wrong, but if you don’t usually say “oh so many My Little Pony fans/people who like to read Stephenie Meyer’s books/Math students are racist and classist and fat-shamers” (many of them must be), then don’t say “many vegans are x” if x is not inherent to being vegan.
It’s ok: “vegans don’t eat animal products”. Because not eating animal products is part of being vegan.
It’s NOT OK: “vegans are all white and racist!”. Because being white or racist is not part of being vegan. If you are any of those, you’re not necessarily vegan, and if you’re vegan, you’re not necessarily any of those.
If a vegan did anything bad to you, I’m sorry, but I don’t see what I have to do with that particular person since we only share one belief and might have dinner at the same restaurant. I fight against racism, classism, and body shaming. And being vegan has nothing to do with that.
Now that I got that out of my heart, I wanted to point out that that image is also sexist, because while we see a man’s belly and a woman’s thighs. We are supposed to think: no, no, it’s not healthy to have such a belly. But, when confonted with her thighs, we’re supposed to think: no woman should thighs like that. They’re not sexy. The message is clear: there are two types of being fat and, while both of them are bad, one of them is worse, and it’s the one where women stop being sexy. If they really meant that being fat is something bad by itself and it doesn’t matter who is the fat person, they would’ve shown two big bellies without targeting so clearly at gender.
